In the beginning of the chapter, Angela asks James how old he is and he replies, "I'm fifty-three years old." That's how old he thinks he is. Angela then asks him what his name is and he replies, "James." That's how he feels he should be known. When James was going through his life being called James, he believed that it was all that was expected of him.

He believed that everyone around him expected him to be James and nothing else.
